Something that’s been on my mind…

I want to start by thinking about what “literacy” really means in the context of the internet and social media.

Today, almost everyone uses social platforms on a daily basis. We constantly consume information—and at the same time, we’re also sharing and spreading it ourselves. The power to distribute information, once limited to a small group of people, is now in the hands of virtually anyone. But with that shift comes a serious challenge: we don’t always take the time to fully understand the information we encounter.

Online content is often short, fragmented, and stripped of context. As a result, things that should be carefully understood are instead judged based on quick impressions or the tone of a few words. That vague understanding then gets passed along, spreading further without ever being properly examined.

One of the biggest issues is how easily we assume that something must be true simply because “everyone is saying it.” But who is this “everyone”? More often than not, it’s just a small group of loud or highly visible voices—not a true reflection of the public as a whole.

This is where literacy becomes essential. Literacy isn’t just about what you know—it’s about how you think. It’s the ability to pause and ask, “Is this actually true?” or “Is there another way to look at this?” instead of accepting information at face value.

And literacy doesn’t only apply to those consuming information—it also matters for those creating it. When we post or share something, we need to think about how our words might be interpreted. Even small differences in wording can lead to misunderstandings or unintended harm.

The internet and social media are incredibly powerful tools. They offer speed, accessibility, and freedom—but that freedom comes with responsibility. Each of us plays a role in how information is understood, evaluated, and shared.

In a world overflowing with information, what matters most isn’t how fast we react, but how accurately we understand. Instead of simply going along with the flow, we need to slow down, think critically, and choose our words with care.

That mindset is what defines true literacy in today’s digital age.

I know it’s not easy.

People feel uncertain—about others, about work, about the future.

It’s natural to want information.

But holding onto your own beliefs matters.
